Concert for a Good Cause

Alerting you not to dance but something related… a delightful recital coming up this weekend by pianist Henry Roche, an old friend, formerly Principal Pianist and Head of Music at the Royal Ballet, playing a programme of delectable pieces including some by the romantic composer Moscheles from whom Henry is descended, and highlights from the ballet repertoire… The concert is part of the Music at the Limes series run by the Exuberant Trust, which supports young people in Oxfordshire with small grants to help them realise their creative potential in any of the arts.

You will find more information on the Trust’s website here: http://www.exuberant-trust.org.uk/

What nicer way to spend a spring evening… and your attendance and contribution will be greatly appreciated.

See you there!

Visible Music

Two old instruments by Ballet in Small Spaces

Dances, Oracles, Mysteries by Barefoot Opera

Share an intimate evening of music and dance collaboration with top performers conjuring forgotten pasts into present life through unusual repertoire.

The salon piece of 18th century composer and viola da gamba virtuoso Carl Friedrich Abel range in character from exuberant and playful to wistful and melancholic. They are the inspiration for Two old instruments in which Jonathan Rees and Susie Crow reflect on history and memory.

Dances, Oracles, Mysteries features the piano duo Mariko Brown and Julian Jacobson, singer Jenny Miller and dancers Chiara Vinci and Francesco Mangiacasale in evocative response to Debussy’s piano pieces, songs, and the composer’s little know ballet K’hamma, blurring the boundaries between performing disciplines to create a subtle but exhilarating narrative.

Performances:

Friday 25th April 7.30pm Bristol Music Club, 76 St Paul’s Road, Clifton BS8 1LP

Sunday 27th April 7.30pm St Leonard’s Church Shoreditch, Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6JN

Book tickets for these performances through WeGotTickets.com here and here

Prices £13, £11 concessions plus 10% booking fee; or £15 on the door.

Help Ballet in Small Spaces

hello All
Seeking your support – could you be a Ballet in Small Spaces angel?  Read on…

Two Old Instruments is a collaboration between dancer Susie Crow of Ballet In Small Spaces and viola da gamba player Jonathan Rees (of prize winning Duo Domenico).  It celebrates the salon pieces of 18th century virtuoso Carl Friedrich Abel.  Some comments on last year’s work in progress:
“Music and dance in easy harmony…”
“Exquisite detail…”
“Elements of melancholy, drama, half playful, half serious…”

Two Old Instruments is designed to be performed in intimate settings: concert or village halls, churches, libraries, museums, historic houses.  We already have three bookings in April 2014 and are discussing additional dates with other venues.

It has just two performers and neither scenery nor stage lighting is essential for performance. However, a visual highlight will be costumes by talented Oxford based stage designer Ellen Nabarro, evocative of both past and present.  As ever, Ballet In Small Spaces is also seeking to provide opportunities for young artists in different media: photographer Dulcy Lott will be creating still images and video artist Chris Atkins a film of the performance.

Could you be an angel?  Ballet in Small Spaces is looking for donors to enable us to complete the project.  Coincidentally, 2014 sees the 10th anniversary of Ballet in Small Spaces which had its first performance in February 2004.  The simplest way to support Two Old Instruments is to donate £10 – or more if you wish! – by 10th February 2014 (see details below).

All our angels will be acknowledged by name on Ballet In Small Spaces’s website (unless you wish to remain anonymous) and when you come to see the show there will be a complimentary drink of your choice to celebrate our anniversary.

Thank you!
Susie

Come and watch!

Open Ballet Class
Saturday 1st December 2012, 11.30-1.00pm Intermediate/Advanced class
Summertown United Reformed Church Hall, Banbury Road, Summertown

Two years ago I opened my Saturday 11.30am class to visitors to view, in aid of the re-flooring of the hall.  It seems a good moment to open up this class once again to friends, colleagues and neighbours who would like to see what we do, and to show off the refurbished hall and its improved floor and what it is contributing to the work. I am very proud of the standard that has been achieved by dancers attending and would like to celebrate it.
You are most cordially invited to come, watch and enjoy.  Please do bring any friends, family or colleagues who might be interested.  We will try and squeeze in as many as we can.
Hoping to see you on Saturday…

From the North Wall

The North Wall is about to embark on its biggest project to date. We will be spending the summer rehearsing a new play by the writer Ron Hutchinson that will open at The North Wall in September and then play for a month in London at Arcola. This play will be rehearsed alongside our outreach project for young artists.

North Wall Oxford

We are looking for possible accommodation for the choreographer, a sound designer, a costume designer and 8 actors to cover the period from 1st September to 15thSeptember. Prior to the 1st, St Edwards is kindly accommodating the cast in a boarding house. If anyone has a room or two to spare in the first two weeks of September, we would be hugely grateful. I can promise that they are all extremely nice and well behaved (yes, even the actors!). With a need to keep a tight hold on budget and arts funding being what it is, any help would make a considerable difference.

Please let me know if you have a room or know anyone else who is a supporter of the arts and might help. We do have a small amount of budget to offset any expenses incurred.

Thank you

Best Wishes,

Lucy
