I am the Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator. I put relevant messages from TVP on the Victoria Road Notice Board. I will try to post messages that are sent to me straight onto this site, so a wider audience can see the messages. I used to put letters through the letter boxes of all the houses but as I do this post as a volunteer it started to get very expensive. I also feel that putting it straight onto this site would be a green way of sending information, instead of using paper. I also feel that people will be able to get hold of me quickly if they need any information. The Home Office has announced that a National Domestic Burglary Awareness Day of action will take place on Tuesday 7th April. The Neighbourhood Specialist Officers and the Police Community Support Officers will be out in the community to offer information, they will also be handing out leaflets on Crime Prevention, and bike marking etc.
The Three Top Tips from Neighbourhood Watch are;
KEYS
Never leave keys near a window or door (thieves are increasingly stealing car keys so they can take cars, often using a hook or magnet on a stick pushed through the letterbox).
WINDOWS
In just over one third (30%) of burglaries with entry, the thief gained access through an unlocked door or open window. Make sure doors and windows are locked particularly when leaving the house.
GARAGES and SHEDS
Are often left unlocked and may be full of tools ideal for breaking into the rest of the house. Fit sheds and garages with strong padlocks. Always lock ladders in the garage or shed to stop a thief using them.

What is the difference between ‘neighborhood watch’ and ‘neighborhood policing’? I guess the first is based on residents and the latter on police, but am I correct?

Neighbourhood Policing is the allocation of Police Officers or Police Community Support Officers to a geographical area to ensure that they are aware of the issues affecting that area.
Neighbourhood Watch is an informal network of non police members of the public, administered and supported by the police, with the intention of acting as the eyes and ears of the police in support of their policing objectives.

He confronted the couple who made off immediately. The URN for this message is 491/19/04. A Distraction Burglary occurred in Staverton Road Oxford on Sunday 19th April at about 10.45 am. The offender knocked on the victims’ front door and said, he had been at work all night and was on his way home when his car had suddenly broken down. He asked if he could use the telephone, the aggrieved let the man into her house, while he pretended to use the phone and the yellow pages, the aggrieved left him alone for a second while she went to get a drink for him. He left the house saying he had to get something from his car and that he would return, but he never did. The aggrieved then noticed her hand bag was missing; it contained cash, bankcards and personal items. The man is described as a white male 5’6″ in height, short fair hair, aged about 30 with a Scottish accent, he was wearing dark cloths. Entry was gained through a basement window, the thieves got away with an Ipod, camera and jewellery. There is no URN for this message. A Distraction Burglary occurred in Erica Close, Blackbird Leys on Monday 11th May. The Police were quiet sure that they knew who the offender was, the women in question is a prolific Distraction Burglar who has committed previous offences. At Court yesterday she pleaded guilty to the theft and has been remanded pending Crown Court sentencing. This is a crime that is always committed against the more vulnerable people in our society. The Police would like to reassure the public that she has been charged and is locked up, they are not looking for anyone else in connection with this offence.

Police have launched a murder investigation into the death of a man in Cowley today (18/5).
At around 11.45am, a black man was seen to cycle past the Regal, Cowley Road. Shortly after, the same man was seen arguing with another man in Ridgefield Road and then at around 11.50am a man staggered into the Regal with stab wounds.
Police officers and paramedics attempted to save the man’s life at the scene but he was taken to the JR2 Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
It is considered that this was a deliberate attack and not a random act.
Det Chief Insp Mick Saunders, leading the investigation, said: “We now believe this was a deliberate attack and a murder investigation has been launched.
“Magdalen Road has been cordoned off and police continue with their enquiries in the Cowley Road area.
“We are still in the very early stages of the investigation and are attempting to establish how, where and when the man sustained his injuries.
“I appeal to anyone who was in the area this morning and saw a black man who appeared to be injured to contact police immediately.
“We need to find out exactly how this man was injured and where. If you have any information, however insignificant you think it might be please get in touch.
“Anyone with information that could assist police enquiries, especially anyone who was in the Ridgefield Road / Magdalene Road area at the time is urged to contact Oxford CID via Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505. If you don’t want to speak to police and don’t want to leave your name contact the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

Force Open Day
Thames Valley Police’s fourth annual Open Day will be held at the Force Training Centre, Sulhamstead, near Reading, on Saturday 8 August, from 10am to 4pm.
The open day will showcase the work of specialist roles and departments in TVP, such as the Air Support Unit, Roads Policing, the Mounted Section and the Dog Section. The Dog Section and Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be performing displays throughout the day.
Admission is £2 per adult and children under 16 go free. Parking at the site is limited and will be available on a first come first served basis. No dogs are allowed on site except guide dogs.

I have reported the pothole in the road outside 89 Victoria Road to the Highways Department.
I noticed a few weeks ago that a fairly large, deep pothole has appeared in the road near 89 Victoria Road and feel that it is very dangerous for cyclists.
I will let you know if I have a response from the Highways Dept.
Please be careful if you are cycling in that area as it will cause a very nasty accident if someone on a bike does go into the pothole.

Thames Valley Police has just detained a prolific offender who is responsible for a series of burglaries in the Headington, East Oxford and St. Clements areas of Oxford City. He has admitted to 35 separate offences which took place between February and May of this year and is now awaiting a custodial sentence.

In recent months there has been a marked increase in the number of registration plates removed from vehicles in the Oxford City area. They have been used for a variety of crimes and the police has had considerable success in recovering the plates and solving the associated crimes.
The purpose of this message is to ask Neighbourhood Watch members if you would keep an eye open for discarded regisration plates and should you come across one, and it is safe to do so, to bring it into the police stations at either St.Aldates or Cowley.
Your action would help the police enormously in fighting this type of crime.

PC Jan Robinson – One of Oxford’s Crime Reduction Advisors has requested the following information to go to all Watch members:
We have had several calls from concerned Oxfordshire residents who have been contacted by an unsolicited phone call from a Company offering to fit an alarm system for them.
The sales person uses high pressure methods of sales and claims they are working with the Police and in the case of recent calls has mentioned both the local Crime Reduction Officer and Neighbourhood watch Co-ordinator by name in an effort to persuade the resident to consider their product.
Clearly Thames Valley Police would never divulge contact details for any victims of crime to a private Company, please advise your members accordingly. Any resident wishing to obtain genuine advice re security installations should contact their Crime Reduction Advisor or use the Oxfordshire County Council, “Buy with Confidence”. (0845 051 0845)

COLD CALLING by suspicious RSPCA door to door workers. We have had a couple of reports from members of the public about 3 males knocking on doors in Friars Wharf saying that they are from the RSPCA, once in the house they are then asking for bank account numbers and other personal details. So far no items have been taken from the homes, but these men are very obviously targeting the elderly. The RSPCA have been contacted about this and stated that they do not have anyone working on their behalf in the Oxford area. The men are described as follows, male 1 white about 5’11” tall, in his 40’s, tubby/large build, short dark hair with white bits in it, clean shaven and a ruddy complexion. He was wearing a green sleeveless tabard, which had RSPCA written in red across the chest. The other two males were described as white, younger aged between 15 and 25 years, about 5’3″ tall, of slender build both had short dark wavy hair one was wearing a maroon coloured top the other a navy bl!

Watch Members are being warned of a recent telephone scam, where callers pose as BT representatives. People have been targeted by the unscrupulous callers, who ask for a payment to be immediately made to clear arrears on their telephone account. People are told that if they don’t pay straight away, they will be cut off, and the caller is then asked for their bank or credit card details. Sometimes, the scammer terminates the call mid-way to demonstrate that they are able to cut off the phone line.Anyone receiving similar calls is reminded not to divulge their banking details, and to report the call to Trading Standards on 0845 4 04 05 06
